Our Community: Food Access and Hunger Relief

Words by

Now more than ever, we’ve witnessed the power of community as people across the U.S. have come together to fight for food access for those in need.

With millions out of work and many visiting food banks for the first time, our partners are working hard to meet this new demand. The need is immense, and people are getting creative: diverting chef-made meals to those in need, converting mobile markets into drive-thrus, delivering food bundles to the elderly and housebound, and personally rescuing food for our neighbors.

To date, Gotham Greens has donated over 20,000 lbs. of fresh produce to support our partners whose efforts are crucial in the united effort to nourish our community.

Here are a few ways you can support their efforts:

Green Bronx Machine:
Stephen and Lizette Ritz of Green Bronx Machine are providing 2000+ meals a day for Bronx residents through pickup and delivery. They are personally rescuing food at all hours and delivering to their neighbors in need. The teachers in them can’t be stopped either! Mr. and Mrs. Ritz are keeping in touch with their students virtually with a weekly read aloud.

Maryland Food Bank:
In early March, we worked with MDFB’s Mobile Market, based just a few miles from our greenhouse, to provide fresh produce to our neighbors. Since the onset of COVID-19, this program has transformed into a “drive thru” to distribute large quantities of fresh food to affected communities.

Rhode Island Pride:
Since the onset of this pandemic, Rhode Island Pride board members and volunteers have taken on the task of collecting donations of food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies to be delivered to community members that have been impacted by the pandemic. Chef Jereme and World Central Kitchen
Chef Jereme, along with three other chefs, have donated their time and skills to cook meals for doctors, nurses, first responders and unemployed restaurant workers throughout Chicago. Gotham Greens has partnered with Chef Jereme and World Central kitchen to donate 1000+ meals per day.
